Spring Professional Development Workshops Open for Registration

Shedd Aquarium just opened up registration for two new professional development opportunities for this spring. These two workshops provide unique views behind the scenes at Shedd, provide unique classroom materials, and give ample opportunity to ask questions to our experts. If you have any questions about these workshops or are looking for other opportunities, please don't hesitate to reach out - mmetz@sheddaquarium.org! Please help in spreading the word.

Focusing on Physics at Shedd
Date: Wednesday, April 12, 2023
Time: 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Location: Virtual, Zoom
Grades: 7-12 educators
Price: $25.00 per educator
2 ISBE clock hours available

Physics is all around us, but not always visible to our learners. This virtual training will focus on three physics laws and how they can be seen and understood in real ways at the aquarium. Although physics as a subject is not taught at all grade levels, the practical, engaging ways we present these laws and their connections to animals will allow educators to make any STEM lesson connected to physics. Throughout the training, participants will get to meet our focus animals and ask questions about their biology and behaviors to help learners authentically connect with physics.

Microplastics Practicum on the Great Lakes
Date: Saturday, April 29, 2023
Time: 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Location: In-Person, Shedd Aquarium
Grades: 7-12 educators
Price: $35.00 per educator, parking provided
3 ISBE clock hours available

Microplastics are small pieces of plastic (less than five millimeters long) which can harm many types of aquatic organisms. During this hands-on training, we’ll be discussing the sources of microplastics and exploring a few different lab techniques to reveal and quantify microplastic pollution in water and sediment. We will focus on sampling, lab methods, common issues, and student engagement. The training will include a behind-the-scenes tour of filtration systems at Shedd and some unique views of animals who call Shedd home.
