Ocean Literacy Network - see some professional development opportunities below!

Participate in a virtual in-service with Shedd Aquarium

In each interactive training, you will collaborate with other educators and meet a Shedd animal that applies your learning. You will also experience content rooted in NGSS on topics such as aquatic science and informal teaching practices. Leave with actionable information and resources.  Illinois educators can receive clock hours. Check out opportunities for 2020 below.

Teaching Tough Topics: Inheritance, Traits and Adaptations

December 1, 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. CST

1.5 ISBE clock hours  available

Some topics are tougher than others to make inquiry-based, engaging and grounded in a real-world question.  Inheritance, traits and adaptations can be one of those. During this virtual, hour-and-a-half session, educators will explore strategies around the concepts, meet an animal to practice scientific thinking and connect with Shedd experts to learn about real-world examples in current aquatic science. Educators will leave with actionable tools to implement in the classroom.

Supporting Inquiry in a Virtual Setting

December 5, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. CST

2.5 ISBE clock hours  available

Virtual learning is going to be present in our schools’ foreseeable future. Let’s prepare ourselves to support inquiry-based learning in the virtual setting. During this virtual, two-and-a-half-hour training, educators will fill their toolkits with specific strategies to implement problem-based learning. They will connect their students to nature through media and examples from the backyard. Educators will leave with multiple ways to spark the inquiry process for any learner.

Supporting Science Literacy

December 10, 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. CST

1.5 ISBE clock hours available

Taking the time to support and develop all our students’ critical thinking and technical reading skills is one of the most valuable contributions a science educator can make! During this virtual, hour-and-a-half session, educators will have the opportunity to learn new strategies for supporting their struggling readers using science-aligned texts and practice using MicroLabs to facilitate reading and discussion. Educators will leave with hands-on inquiry activities to promote science literacy.
